Mechanical and Electronic Keyless Locks
Keyless locks are locks that you gain entry by using other means besides keys. The locks can be accessed by a key pad. The key pad can be mechanical or electronic.
Mechanical key pad locks allow you to use one code only and can be changed quite easily. These come in a variety of designs and finishes. They come in deadbolt and knob/lever designs. The most secure is deadbolt keypad locks. Knob/lever keypad locks are usually used during daytime use or on interior doors. They are not recommended solely for when the business is closed or night time use on exterior doors. A deadbolt or other security is recommended with the use of a knob/lever keypad lock on an exterior door.
Electronic keypad locks offer multiple users using different codes to gain entry. The codes can be easily changed for each user. There are different manufacturers, models, and designs. The units are also called stand alone electronic locks. These are usually not hooked up to a control panel like access control systems. But you can have the same capabilities from the stand alone lock. They run on batteries or commercial grade electronic locks can be wired to a low voltage power source so that batteries do not have to be replaced. Batteries however last about a year. I have not had a customer yet that the batteries have lasted less than a year. They normally use 4 -5 double AA batteries. Kaba Mas makes a keypad lever that powers itself by depressing the lever. This lock requires no batteries or power supply.
An audit trail feature is available on commercial brands. This allows you to track who, what time, and what day someone has gained access using the lock. Some commercial electronic locks have a card reader or proximity reader as well. This can give the option of using a code on a keypad or using a proximity card to gain access.
