Fire/Burglary Safes – Bolting Down

A standard rule about bolting down safes to the floor, is that if they weigh less than 2000 lbs., they should be bolted down. This may seem like a lot of weight for bolting down a safe, but it is a good rule. What we want to accomplish is for the thief or potential thief to take more time than they want to. A safe that weighs 1950 lbs. probably wouldnot take a noticeable time difference to remove from the premises than if it were not bolted.

A normal fire safe that has bolt down holes built in the safe usually weighs 300 to 700 lbs. These are small and shorter and if they are bolted down, harder to remove from the premises. They are not tall enough to tip over and pull the stainless steel anchors or lag bolts from the floor. Thus, bolting down these smaller safes is more benneficial  in making a thief take more time.

These things are a good idea in anything you buy for security. Make them take more time. Secure things with items that make noise. If at all possile if someone is trying to enter the premises, make sure they can be seen. No bushes or shrubbery to hide behind and break doors without being seen. Carrying a safe out a back door with out being seen. Use lighting when at all possible.

The reason the small  size safes are most common is the weight limit going up stairs. These safes are usually placed in closets in the master bedroom. Although this is the first place thieves look. Larger Fire/Burglary rated safes put in the basement is the better place. One reason is they hold more bulky items. If the thieves are in a real hurry they won’t even take the time to go into the basement unless they have a reason to. The larger safes weigh more and will be harder to remove from the premises.

The last bit of advice is limit the amount of people who know you have a safe and especially where it is located. Children love to show off their parents possessions. Work man that come to service appliances or furnaces. Neiborhs, even though we have known them for a long time. People make mistakes when talking. They might mention the safe to another friend with out thinking about security. The worst thing that happens is someone tells the right person what type of safe and where it is located. Our personal security information is the one thing you should not let some people know.
